Welcome to my blog. Let me introduce myself, my name is Amy Micallef. I am 18 years old and I am currently studying a Bachelor of Communications and Media majoring in Digital and Social Media and Marketing and Advertising at the University of Wollongong.
A little bit about myself I enjoy writing, I have a passion for helping people. I love listening to music and spending quality time with my wonderful family and friends. I enjoy travelling the world with my family and being able to think about life in a new way.
Before I begin you might want to know how I got here. Let me tell you it was a long road to get to where I am today, a lot of thinking and deciding.
During high school, each week I’d come up with a new idea of what I wanted to do in the future I wanted to be an interior designer, a psychologist, a full-time youtuber. At one point I even had a dream to work at NASA to become an astronomer. But even still, anything I suggested at the time I never really thought “hey this is interesting…”
I remember during my final years of high school questioning why nothing I found interested me. I got frustrated, tired of trying to come up with ideas when I knew I wasn’t going to like it. I did settle for the fact that I wasn’t meant to know but I guess I was really waiting for one of those “this is it, this is what I’m meant to do” moments.
When I finally researched about the Communication and Media degree I was intrigued, I actually saw myself doing this course. Last year, when I went to the uni open day I remember sitting in the lecture room with my parents beside me. The head of the faculty was talking about what you expect to learn and I sat in my seat contemplating how I felt if I did this course.
In that chair I finally had that “light bulb” moment it’s this feeling that you just knew in your heart this is where you were going to end up. It really was, I got early admission and I was very excited to leave school so I begin learning this course.
Before I started uni, I got the opportunity to work with KPMG for a month. I gained a lot of skills like organisation, scheduling, writing PowerPoints, taking minutes and many more.
From this opportunity I found myself thinking about where I saw myself in future after uni. It wasn’t something I stressed about, when the thought came into my head I’ll think about it and slowly decide.
I did come up with a goal of mine which is to work doing innovation (hopefully at the innovation lab at KPMG). But also want to be able to showcase the companies around through marketing and social media. I want to one day be able to develop my own company which will advertise and market for corporate companies.
So…a new beginning? / The Start of Uni.
First day of University, the beginning of my BCM Degree. What can I say? I have really never been more excited to start a new beginning like this. I have always been a big believer in new beginnings. It’s the opportunity where your mind is able to wonder with curiosity as you begin to try new things.
You feel your mind open to the endless new possibilities around you whilst you finally allow yourself to have a new perspective of life. Even though I have started uni, I don’t really know what to expect and I’m okay with not knowing. I know that the endless hours of thinking about the future are pointless.
New beginnings aren’t meant for you to know everything straight away, you’re not supposed to have all the answers. Beginning a new journey is about accepting whatever may come your way, being aware that you will fail and it is okay to fail. Most importantly being able to grow with the knowledge and the experiences you have.
So with starting my BCM degree, learning my subjects I am open to new opportunities, and to new ideas. I am open to failing over and over again until I finally succeed.
I’m going to take this new beginning as a wake up call to try new things and explore the endless possibilities of life. Life is so short and I want to be able to do things that make me enjoy life and make me excited.
Here is to this new beginning. A journey in which I will take through the time I am at University where I will document the progress from the course. I am very excited to take this journey with you all.
Take care everyone. Until next week,
